San Francisco for work — and a Segway adventure!

I just got back from San Francisco, where I attended the “CDA Presents the Art and Science of Dentistry” event, conducted by the California Dental Association. Dental Tribune published three issues of our at-show newspaper, and as part of my editorial assignments I photographed much of the activity in the exhibit hall and in the classrooms. I also wrote up a few articles about some of the educational offerings and some of the other activity.

After the work portion of the trip concluded, I stayed in town for an extra day to do a bit of sightseeing. The highlight was a Segway tour of the waterfront area. I had never been on a Segway before, and I was a bit apprehensive to do this on streets with such steep hills. But it turned out to be a great way to travel!

Anaheim for the dental conference

I just got back from Anaheim, Calif., where I attended “CDA Presents the Art and Science of Dentistry” for work. Dental Tribune published three “at-show” newspapers at this event, and I was one of the three editors who were assigned to cover the proceedings.

On one of the days I had two articles and pictures on Page 1, and on another day I photographed NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Retired MLB pitching ace Orel Hershiser, who were signing autographs in the exhibit hall.

Endo Tribune and an article about new materials for root canal therapy

Here’s the cover of the latest issue of Endo Tribune — which includes my report from the recent Midwinter Meeting in Chicago, in which Dr. Allen Ali Nasseh, a practicing endodontist from Boston, announced recent developments in bioceramic nanotechnology for root canal treatment. The article is published on the Dental Tribune website — direct link here — or if you click on the page 1 image below, it will open in a larger window.

I have met Dr. Nasseh several times and have heard him speak. He is considered one of the most knowledgeable and innovative endodontists in the world.

Chicago Midwinter Meeting 2013

It was another visit to Chicago recently, for the annual Midwinter Meeting, conducted by the Chicago Dental Society. I was there for Dental Tribune, where we published three issues of our daily at-show newspaper. I wrote up several articles and about the event, and I took plenty of photographs — mostly in the exhibit hall — for publication in print and online.

My article about the annual celebration conducted by America’s Toothfairy: National Children’s Health Foundation, is posted to the Dental Tribune website here; and about Curve Dental, here.

Here are images from some of the pages of the show daily publication:

Photograph of a tooth replica on the cover of roots magazine

One of the most interesting parts of my job at Dental Tribune is editing our endodontic magazine, called “roots.” The cover of the latest issue of roots features a photograph of a “TrueTooth” tooth replica, which is now used for training of endodontists, also known as root canal specialists.

The TrueTooth replicas are the invention of Dr. L. Stephen Buchanan of California, who is a brilliant dentist, lecturer and inventor. I interviewed Dr. Buchanan about his new tooth replicas and how they are used for endodontic education. If you have ever had a root canal, it’s the pulp chamber (or roots) that the dentist cleans out and fills. The more complex the canals, the more difficult the treatment — which is why it’s a good idea to go to a specialist if you ever need a root canal!

You can see the cover of roots and inside pages directly below. Click on the images to make them bigger. You can also read an online version of my interview with Dr. Buchanan by clicking here.
