Dental Tribune published a daily newspaper at the Greater New York Dental Meeting, held recently at the Javits Center. I wrote several articles and took lots of pictures.
For one of the articles, I interviewed executives from Henry Schein Dental about a new initiative to help patients and doctors understand how all conditions, from oral health to whole body health, affect a person’s overall wellbeing. For another article, I interviewed a software developer about some patient communication tools he helped develop.
I also wrote a “things to do in New York City” article for those who traveled to the event from out of town.

Last month, I made a work trip to Las Vegas for the American Dental Association’s Annual Session, held at Mandalay Bay. I was one of the editors on site from Dental Tribune. We published three issues of our at-show newspaper.
As part of my on-site reporting I interviewed Olympic athletes Rick Merlo and Brittany Hayes, who both won silver medals in Beijing for water polo! They were at the event to tout high-tech mouthguards. My article is available on the Dental Tribune website — link here.
I also photographed boxing legend Mike Tyson, who was signing boxing gloves in the exhibit hall!

Here are some recent pictures taken in and around Lower Manhattan — including the New York Stock Exchange, Federal Hall and the statue of George Washington, and the New York City skyline and Statue of Liberty as seen from the Staten Island Ferry.
I recently went to Washington, D.C., for work, to cover the annual session of the American Association of Orthodontists. One of the interviews I conducted was with the president of a company that manufactures orthodontic appliances — also known as braces. Turns out that not only is he the president of the company, he is also a customer! He was wearing braces himself.

I’ve just been to Chicago for the annual Midwinter Meeting, which is attended by thousands of dentists. I was there as part of my job with Dental Tribune. We published three issues of an at-show newspaper, which offers news about the meeting and information about new products on display.
I wrote several articles on site, for publication in our daily issues. I interviewed a dental assistant from Rochester, N.Y., about special equipment that allows a dental practice to take digital X-rays. I interviewed an entrepreneur who has a mobile van that allows patients to have high-resolution diagnostic images taken. I also interviewed executives from a company that manufactures lasers that are used in dental treatment.
In addition, I wrote about an event conducted by National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: America’s Toothfairy, which is a non-profit organization that facilitates delivery of dental care to children whose parents cannot afford it.

Earlier this month I went on a work trip to Hawaii, to cover the American Dental Association annual convention for Dental Tribune. We published three issues of an at-show newspaper, distributed on site at the convention center in Honolulu.
For one of my articles, I interviewed the president of a dental supply company about a new product that can treat cavities without any drilling.
Before the event got started, I got to spend a few days of vacation time on Maui, and after the work commitment ended I spent two more days exploring Oahu with my co-worker, Kristine.
Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Nobel Biocare facility in New Jersey along with Dental Tribune International President/CEO Peter Witteczek. Peter and I were among a small group of media representatives selected to participate in Nobel Biocare’s first Dental Media Day, to learn more about the NobelProcera system of CAD/CAM dentistry. All of us in attendance were quite impressed. One of the most dramatic moments came midway through the morning, when — after we had listened to a few lectures and had seen the new software — somebody pushed a button, the giant screen lifted and curtains parted to reveal the manufacturing facility where the crowns and bridges are actually created.
I was struck by the fact that Nobel Biocare has the ability to mass manufacture items that are highly individualized. Every crown, every bridge coming off the assembly line is created to unique specifications. And for users of the system itself, things couldn’t be easier. Part of the presentation involved getting participants to design a crown and send it into production. The FedEx man just delivered it … and I must say I think I did a pretty good job. Of course, it helps that it was produced with highly advanced software in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.
During the recent Midwinter Meeting in Chicago, I had the opportunity to interview a New York City dentist who invented a device that makes getting an injection more comfortable for patients. This guy is my hero!

The Greater New York Dental Meeting is held at the Javits Center each year, starting the weekend after Thanksgiving. I was there to cover the event for Dental Tribune. I sat in on a number of the various educational offerings for endodontists.

Tom Brokaw offered the keynote address, and I attended his talk and took pictures for an article on Page 1 of our daily paper. I also conducted interviews with executives from two of the exhibiting companies and wrote articles about each.
