No, this is not Mike Myers. It’s the “Austin Powers impersonator,” and I’ve run into this character on the exhibit hall floor at many dental conventions over the years.
He is hired by Millennium Dental Technologies, a company that manufactures laser equipment for use by dentists, to help draw attention to the company booth. He does this in a fun, lighthearted way.
His name is Richard Halpern, and you can learn more about him at his Facebook page. Also check out my interview with Richard that I wrote recently for Dental Tribune.
I recently had the opportunity to interview Dr. Robert S. Roda, the incoming president of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), during the association’s annual session, held recently in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Roda is a practicing endodontist in Arizona and an educator. My interview with him is published in the latest issue of roots magazine, shown below. The interview with Dr. Roda is also on the Dental Tribune website — direct link here.
These dental students were killed in a senseless act of gun violence. I used local police sources and statements from the ADA to put together a report for Dental Tribune. To read my article, click here.
I recently got back from a work trip to San Antonio. The American Dental Association was holding its annual session there, and I was on site to help cover the event for Dental Tribune.
We published three issues of our at-show newspaper. I conducted interviews on site with executives from Henry Schein Dental and attended a press briefing presented by the Boston University dental school and Sirona Dental.
My articles were published in print, as well as on the Dental Tribune website — links here and here.
I also photographed many of the exhibitors at the event:
On the way to and from the convention center each day, we passed by the Alamo! I was able to take pictures in both daytime and at night:
Just before going to San Antonio for work, I got to spend some time in Austin, Texas, with my co-worker Kristine! It was great to hang out with her. Among the excursions we made was a visit to the Texas State Capitol building. We went inside and walked around, including inside the legislative chamber. Among the many portraits of Texas governors are those of Ann Richards and George W. Bush. On the grounds of the capitol was a marble sculpture of the 10 Commandments — with bird droppings on it.
Kristine also took me to my first Texas Longhorns game! That was fun. After the game we saw Bevo — the team’s mascot.
My friend Garrett and I took a trip out to Cherry Grove last week. We stayed at the Belvedere! It was my first time staying at this fabled den of sleaze. In the evenings, we went to some of the bars and watched some of the performers. On one of the days I walked all the way over to Sunken Forest.
I very much enjoy Cherry Grove. It seems a bit more relaxed than the Pines, and there is plenty to do there. I especially like the bars with their live entertainment, featuring drag queens, muscle boys and porn stars who mingle freely with all.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Robert S. Roda, president of the American Association of Endodontists, for the Dental Tribune publications recently. Dr. Roda is one of the top root canal specialists in the country.
Here it is as it appeared in Endo Tribune — click to make the pages bigger.
Here are some pictures I took during a recent visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’m quite fond of the newly refurbished American galleries, where Washington Crossing the Delaware is displayed. David’s Death of Socrates and Van Gogh’s Irises are also favorites. I took the skyline picture from the museum’s roof deck, which looks out over Central Park.
